A first-of-its-kind project combining solar and energy storage technology in rural Uruguay
The Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) is an alliance of the world’s leading electricity companies that aims to promote sustainable electrification worldwide. In view of this mission, GSEP launches pilot projects demonstrating the value of implementing new innovative clean energy technologies at the local level.
In collaboration with member companies Hydro-Québec and Enel X and local partners UTE and the Indendencia de San José, GSEP installed the first behind-the-meter battery storage system paired with solar panels in Uruguay.
The Energy Globe Award-winning project was carried out in Colonia Delta, a rural agricultural community, and aimed to lower costs for the farmers while demonstrating how the integration of storage systems and advanced technology solutions is essential to deploy and bolster clean, affordable and secure energy systems.
Data gathered after installation revealed that farmers enjoyed not only significant savings on energy costs, but also improved energy security and stability. As solar and storage technologies are becoming more accessible around the world, the potential for similar systems to be installed in other areas is high, promoting the uptake of clean and stable energy technologies and propelling the energy transition at the grassroots level.
The Uruguay Solar and Storage Project received the 2022 National Energy Globe Award for Uruguay.
Energy Globe Awards are presented annually to innovative projects offering sustainable solutions to environmental problems.
