The share of low-carbon sources increased only marginally over 2010‑2019, to then jump significantly in 2020, gaining almost 4 percentage points, as increased hydropower generation more than balanced a 20% decrease of wind and solar PV production. Natural gas consolidated and slightly increased its dominant share in the power mix throughout the entire period, at more than 50% of the total mix, while coal- and oil-fired generation reduced. This resulted in a decrease of the CO2 intensity per unit of electricity produced of more than 20% from 2010 to 2020.
The fast increase of electrification in Mexico – similar to the situation in China – in the buildings and industry sectors sets them on track with the requirements over the coming decade, while efforts need to be considerably stepped up in the transport sector, where better-designed policies and the roll-out of infrastructure could reverse the current decreasing trend of electrification in the sector (Table 5.11.A). A faster deployment of low-carbon technologies is needed to decarbonise further and faster in the power generation sector.
