The Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) is an alliance of forward-thinking electricity companies from around the world. Our energy-sector-leading members are brought together by a commitment to accelerating zero-carbon electrification in pursuit of a just and timely transition away from the most emissions-intensive sources of energy. This evolution will be necessary if we are to achieve the most pressing global climate goals.
The Global Electrification Monitor (GEM), our flagship publication, tracks the pace of electrification, identifies where bottlenecks impeding progression lie, and points out the most promising opportunities for immediate acceleration – “space-for-action” – across sectors and around the world. This second edition of the report is deeply influenced by the context in which it was developed: the onset of a truly global energy crisis brought about by a pandemic and geopolitical tensions, the effects of which have been felt worldwide.
In the face of this crisis, a renewed emphasis has fallen on the importance of energy security. The turmoil has also brought exciting new opportunities for electrification, as weaknesses in supply chains for other sources of power have become evident. Moving beyond supply, electrified solutions are especially efficient compared with other alternatives; their adoption can improve the overall efficiency, security and cost of the energy system.
